DW2000 - The Sarah Jane Mysteries 2002

 


After the Series Two Doctor Who episode Old Friends the BBC decided to make a spin-off show to air on BBC One on Sundays, it was decided that because of the episode Sarah Jane would be brought back for the show. Sarah Jane is frequently voted the most popular Doctor Who companion by both Doctor Who fans and members of the general public.

Gary Russell was asked to showrun and he accepted, Russell T Davies and Matthew Robinson joined on as Executive Producer.

Elisabeth Sladen would reprise her role as Sarah Jane and two new characters would be created to help Sarah, the first would be Ashley McKenna, played by Yamin Bannerman, Ashley is Sarah’s adopted daughter who Sarah took in after her parents died and the other would be Tom Fairhead, played by David Tennant, Tom is a former policeman turned private detective who is regularly helping Sarah and Ashley.

There would be six episodes in the season, Gary Russell and Russell T Davies would co-write the first and final episode, Chris Chibnall would write the second episode, Paul Abbott would write the third episode, Nicholas Pegg would write the fourth episode and Jed Mercurio would write the fifth episode.






Everything Changes

This story introduces us to the three characters and the story is a darker version of Invasion of The Bane although there is no Luke character.


The Deadly Gas of Pleasure

This is the same as the Torchwood story Day One.


Auton Attack

This story would see the trio investigate a new plastics factory in London and they discover it’s the work of the Nestene and the Autons, this story does take elements from Rose but the Nestene is underneath the factory and as the Autons attack, Sarah jane uses anti-plastic to kill the Nestene and the Autons, this would end up saving the world.


The Spectre of Lanyon Moor

Arriving in Lanyon Moor, Sarah Jane once again meets her old friend the Brigadier and they uncover a slew of unsolved mysteries that centre around the malevolent work of a stranded Tregannan named Sancreda. Sancreda had been trapped on Earth for many millennia, and, upon awakening, tortured and destroyed several humans with his psionic powers. Discovering that he had not been abandoned as he had believed, and that instead he had caused his brother's accidental death, Sancreda threatened to destroy the Earth in a fit of rage, prompting the Brigadier to trick him into causing his own demise before he enacted his wrath on the entire planet.

The Last Cyberman

This story focuses on Sarah, Ashley and Tom dealing with Kit Banks who has the final Cyber conversion chamber and we see he is converting his wife to save her from a fatal disease, however Kit’s wife starts to attack everybody except Kit but she soon starts to become colder to him. In the end Kit’s wife is killed after she falls off a building after being tricked by Tom and Kit is arrested for possessing dangerous goods.


And that concludes Series One of The Sarah Jane Mysteries, overall this was a good season but all was not good behind the scenes as Gary Russell frequently clashed with the BBC and left after the first series due to creative differences.
