DW2000 - Voidwatch 2002
Before the revival of Doctor Who, Russell T Davies began to develop an idea for a science-fiction/crime drama in the style of American dramas, in particular those created by Joss Whedon like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. This idea, originally titled Excalibur, was abandoned until 2001, when BBC Two Controller Jane Root invited Davies to develop an after-watershed science fiction series for the channel. Davies had wanted to introduce a team he called Voidwatch, so Davies decided to make the spinoff revolve around them.
The show would be produced by Red Production Company leading to Nicola Shindler, with Russell T Davies, Mal Young and Matthew Robinson as Executive Producers, the show’s composer would be Murray Gold.
Russell decided to make the character of Captain Vince Bannerman the lead of the show, as such Jonathan Kerrigan was asked to return and he accepted. New characters introduced would be Louise Fraser played by Keeley Hawes, Andy Gossage played by Matthew Macfayden, Kenny Doughty as Peter Dillane and Angela Griffin as Donna Roache, with Richard Mylan as Dave Harper, Louise’s boyfriend.
New World Threats
By Russell T Davies
This story would be very similar to Torchwood’s Everything Changes, however everything with Suzie would be removed and the stuff with the Weevil goes on for longer.
Countrycide
By Chris Chibnall
This would be the same as the real one.
Fighting Cause
By Chris Chibnall
This story would basically see A War Criminal arrive on Earth and convince the Voidwatch team into believing that he’s a good person. But in the end, the army from his planet comes to Earth to arrest him, but Vince shoots him and he dies.
Supermarket Sweep
By Joseph Lidster
This story sees Voidwatch investigate a supermarket which has had strange activity reported from it; we discover that aliens operate the shop from a speaker. Voidwatch discovers the aliens, who are called the Trevi, are planning to hypnotise the shoppers so when they invade Earth they won’t think anything of it. Voidwatch defeats them by blowing up their spaceship which happened to be the shop.
Opening The Rift
By Chris Chibnall
This has similarities to the Torchwood episode “Captain Jack Harkness” but with changes as there’s a change in writer.
End of Days
By Chris Chibnall
This is the same as it is in real life.
The season would’ve been praised, many liked the direction the show took and the fact it could stand on it’s own two feet and didn’t really need to rely on Doctor Who.
